Our advice: From our own experience, we recommend SanDisk memory cards. The SanDisk Extreme Pro is fast enough for high-speed image sequences and 4K video:

The 64 GB Extreme will take up to 90 minutes of super high-res 4K video. For Full HD video we recommend the SanDisk Ultra.

Both cameras use the same sensor format: APS-C (called DX by Nikon). This infographic highlights the sensor areas of both models compared to other common sensor formats:

Note: 1-Euro coin for scale; the coin at 23.25mm diameter is slightly smaller than a US quarter.

The APS-C sensor built into both cameras has a total area of about 367mm² (14.4 sq.in.).

The D5600 uses an optical viewfinder with a penta mirror. The viewfinder covers 95% of the field of view and has a magnification of 0.54x.

The EOS 650D features an optical viewfinder with a penta mirror that also covers 95% of the field of view, its magnification is c. 0.53x.

This infographic illustrates the viewfinder magnifications of both cameras. The black area represents a magnification of 1x, corresponding to natural size; indicated in red is a magnification of 0.85x, the highest value in a any camera on the market today.

Conclusion: Advantages of the D5600 are the higher resolution, the faster and more accurate auto focus and the larger sensitivity. We also like that the battery has more stamina, the lower weight than the EOS 650D and the more compact size. Finally, there's the the built-in wifi that permits remote shooting and image transfer without the need for a cable connection.

CameraCreativ recommends the Nikon D5600.

Nikon's 5000 series is aimed at amateur photographers who outgrew typical entry-level DSLRs like the D3400. Compared to beginner cameras the D5600 brings faster autofocus, higher resolution and sensor cleaning. Also provided is an articulated display, very useful for selfies and many photographic situations like panos or macros.

For even more performance combined with a brighter and higher magnifying vierfinder have a look at Nikon's 7000 series, namely the Nikon D7200 and the Nikon D7500.

The D5600 is a worthy upgrade from older D5xxx Nikons, especially the D5200 and D5300, not so much from the more recent D5500.
