What is the most accurate .177 air rifle

From these statistics, it is clear that while the .22 caliber pellet is more powerful, the .177 pellet is faster, more accurate, and has a longer range. This makes it the perfect caliber pellet for hunting pigeons and rabbits, which are fast.Obviously, if you want to hunt something bigger, the .22 and .25 caliber pellets will be more your style. But if you are in the market for a plinking and varmint control rifle, then a .177 air rifle will be the best option.

Which brings us to the all-important question, which is the best air rifle for the .177 caliber? There are very many different.177 air rifles out there, and here are our top 8 best.

Overview

Starting us off is a rifle that I believe is one of the most powerful break barrel air rifle on the market. That being said, this Gamo air rifle is capable of shooting pellets at a velocity of up to 1250 feet per second.

Though its stock is not made of hardwood, which is what I prefer, the polymer used to make the stock feels and looks very solid. Another thing that made me love this rifle is its ferocious power. With this rifle, I can fire up to 1000 lead pellets in any weather.

And it get’s better, the rifle is fitted with a 4-medium high dampening level, which means it is not as noisy as you would expect from a spring piston rifle of its caliber.

While some reviews have labeled this rifle bulky, I found it to be manageable probably because I have used heavier guns. The gun weighs 6.1 pounds and measures 43 inches in length. Furthermore, it can be used by both left and right handed shooters.

  • Comes with a two stage adjustable trigger
  • It can be used by both left and right handed shooters
  • This air rifle uses both lead and PBA Platinum pellets
  • Comes fitted with a good 4X rifle scope for increased accuracy
  • The gun is powerful enough to hunt small animals such as squirrels

  • The rifle is deafening when you use PBA Platinum pellets

  • Single shot rifle with .177 caliber
  • Single cocking mechanism
  • 3.75-pound trigger pull
  • 18-inch polymer barrel
  • Manual trigger safety

Who is it for?

The Gamo Big Cat is no toy and should not be handled as one. The velocity of this gun is off the charts and as such, it is the ideal rifle for hunting small rodents and for target shooting.

This is a rifle fit for a pro. Thus, if you are new to air rifles, this air gun might not be in your league.

Overview

Designed for competitions, the Crossman Challenger uses the.177 caliber pellet. I got a chance to test this excellent air rifle in a local shooting competition, and I have to say I was impressed with what Crossman has done with this rifle.

For starters, it has an adjustable stock that can be used by both left and right handed shooters. The two stage trigger and the Walther Lothar barrel combine to guarantee precision shooting. An easy to use port make this gun really easy to use. To top it all off, it fires with both CO2 and PCP.

  • Can be used by both left and right handed shooters
  • Is both CO2 and PCP powered

  • It may seem a bit over priced

  • .177 caliber
  • PCP and CO2 power plant
  • Lothar Walther barrel
  • Micro click rear sight
  • Dovetail mounting rail
  • Two stage adjustable trigger
  • Adjustable stock

Who is it for?

As already stated, this air rifle is an accurate air rifle. Therefore, it is recommended for competitive shooters. It is the kind of gun will be confident with when you go in a shooting competition. In fact, Crossman markets this gun as an air rifle for competitions.

Introduction

Another CO2 powered rifle that is reasonably priced, the Sig Sauer MCX .177 Cal 88GR can be a great addition to anyone’s arsenal of pellet rifles.

When I first held this Sig Sauer, I was surprised at how heavy it felt. Weighing about 8 pounds, this rifle was a bit bulkier than most of my other air rifles. The magazine inserted easily and without a fuss. The magazine itself holds up to 30 pellets.

The faux suppressor that extends almost 7 inches performed very well, and the rifle was as quiet as I expected it to be. Another great feature of the rifle is the rail that extends the full length of the gun.

  • The rifle looks amazing
  • Comes with a suppressor installed for maximum noise reduction
  • Uses .177 pellets which are easier to find
  • Is very well made

  • It is rather bulky for an air gun

  • 750 FPS pellet velocity
  • Magazine capacity of 30 pellets
  • CO2 powered
  • 7-inch barrel
  • Picatinny rails
  • Front and rear sight

Who is it for?

The Sig Sauer MCX is relatively new, and the jury is still on it. But if were to be asked, this rifle is best suited for beginners.

Some professionals might feel that it looks and feels a bit too amateurish for their taste. Thus, this is a great rifle for target practice and familiarizing yourself with air rifles.

Introduction

The simplistic design of the Ruger Blackhawk Combo air rifle belies its capabilities. The gun is a break barrel single shot rifle, which means you have to pump it after firing a shot.

This system might take some time to get used to, but eventually, when you do get used to it, using the gun becomes effortless.

Astonishingly, this budget air rifle can propel a pellet at speeds of 1000 FPS. And there is more since this rifle uses the .177 pellet it is quieter and fires more rounds.

I have used this rifle to kill small rodents such as possums at long range. So if you want a rifle that is capable of killing small rodents in a humane manner, then this rifle is a great option.

  • At its price, this rifle can reach impressive speeds of 1000 FPS
  • It has a simplistic design
  • It is an affordable rifle
  • It's powerful enough to kill small rodents

  • The design of the rifle could be better in my opinion.
  • It is not durable and might not serve you as long as other air rifles will.

  • .177 caliber
  • 1000 FPS pellet velocity
  • 4X32 scope mounted
  • Single shot
  • Break barrel mechanism
  • Ambi-composite stock

Who is it for?

Considering it is a single shot break barrel air rifle, this Ruger Blackhawk might not be the best rifle for you if you are new to break barrel rifles.

This gun is perfect if you have used break barrel rifles and want an inexpensive replacement or addition to your collection. Thus, it is not the kind of rifle I would recommend to someone who is new to air rifles, despite its price.

Capable of fitting two 12-gram cylinders in its CO2 compartment this rifle has a muzzle velocity of up to 700 FPS. And similar to the original M 14, this rifle is lightweight and weighs 4.4 pounds. Overview

If you are looking for a silent pellet gun, then the Umarex 2251306 Fusion Combo 750FPS is one I highly recommend. A friend of mine owns this .177 caliber air rifle, and he claims it is the best quietest air rifle in his arsenal.

So when I joined him at his backyard for target practice, I just had to try it out and verify his claims. The rifle’s single stage trigger is a bit hard to pull; however, when you get the hang of it, it becomes easier. As for the velocity, it has a pellet velocity of 750FPS just as its name suggests.

With the rifle, I was able to fire 54 shots before its velocity dropped to below 600FPS, which was impressive. As for the all-important noise level, I was pretty impressed by how silent the rifle was, thanks to its silence air sound moderator.

The 4X32 scope mounted to the scope was of the same quality as the scopes installed on several other rifles within this Umarex’s price range. The black synthetic stock of the gun, was stylish while the rifle’s metal parts had a good finish.

  • The gun is impressively quiet
  • It is a lightweight rifle and weighs 6.6 pounds
  • Has a great matte black finish
  • This gun proved to be easy to shoot with very little recoil
  • The automatic safety is conveniently located in the trigger chamber

  • The 4X32 scope that comes with this rifle performed poorly
  • Loading the .177 pellets can be difficult especially if you have large sausage fingers

  • Single shot rifle
  • Synthetic fiber stock
  • Silencer Air 5 noise dampening technology
  • 750 FPS pellet velocity
  • 3-pound trigger pull

Who is it for?

Despite it having a crappy scope, which can be changed, this Umarex Rifle is truly a delight to shoot. As such, it is the kind of rifle I would use for target practice.

That being the case, this rifle is ideal for someone who is new to air rifles and wants to practice before upgrading to a more powerful air rifle.
