How to use map Minecraft creative

  • Type: Bug

  • Resolution: Works As Intended

  • Affects Version/s: Minecraft 19w06a

  • Environment:

Windows 10 64bit, using bundled Java runtime which is 1.8.0_51

  • Confirmation Status:

Right-clicking with an empty map in creative mode in 19w06a does not fill the map - instead you get a brief movement as if putting the map away, and the map remains empty.  Maps seem to work fine in survival and adventure mode.

Steps to reproduce:

  • Open a world in 19w06a
  • Put yourself in to creative mode (/gamemode creative)
  • Give yourself a map (/give @p minecraft:map)
  • Use right-click to fill the map - observe that this does not work, the map is still empty

Expected result is as per survival mode:

  • Open a world in 19w06a
  • Put yourself in to survival mode (/gamemode survival) or adventure mode (/gamemode adventure)
  • Give yourself a map (/give @p minecraft:map)
  • Use right-click to fill the map - the map should now be filled

This works as expected in 19w05a

A map is a craftable item in Minecraft that shows where players are located within a certain radius of the map's activation. Players will always spawn with a map when playing survival mode, and you can activate the map anywhere. It’s worth mentioning when you activate the map, it’ll only show you the immediate area around you. In Java, the only map you can make is an Empty Locator Map and in Bedrock, you can make an Empty Map and an Empty Locator Map.

Just like anything in Minecraft, you’re going to need to get a few other resources before crafting a Map. Listed below are all the items you will need to prepare a map, as well as a screenshot demonstrating the recipe placement for both an Empty Map and an Empty Locator Map.

To use a map, you’ll need to activate it, and activating a map is a simple process. Once you have the map in your hand, if you’re playing on console all you need to do is press the left trigger and the map will be active. If you’re playing on PC, all you need to do is right-click and the map will be active.

Once a map is crafted, it starts off at level 0 and you could level it up all the way up to level 4. The higher the level of the map, the more land it’ll cover in the area that it’s activated in. To level up the map, you’ll need to build a Cartography Table. Listed below are all the items you will need to prepare a Cartography Table, as well as a screenshot demonstrating the recipe placement.

Once you have that done, go to the Cartography Table and place your map on the top left along with a piece of paper on the bottom left. You should see that the center says “Zoom Out & Clear” and on the right you’ll see the map and underneath the map, it’ll say it’s level out of 4. Grab the map on the right side and it’ll level it up.

To get the map to its max level just keep putting in the paper until you reach level 4 and it’s maxed out.
