How to make smelter minecraft

  • Make a Crafting Table and put 8 Cobblestones or Blackstones in the outer boxes (leave the center box empty).
  • To use a Furnace, add a fuel source (Coal, Wood, etc.) and the item you want to smelt.

This guide covers the Minecraft Furnace recipe, and how to make and use a Furnace in Minecraft on every platform including a Blast Furnace.

Before you can make a Furnace, you need to build a Crafting Table and collect the necessary materials.

  1. Make a Crafting Table. Put 4 Wood Planks of the same type of wood in each box of the 2X2 crafting grid. You can use any type of wood (Oak PlanksJungle Planks, etc.).

  2. Mine 8 Cobblestones or Blackstones.

  3. Set your Crafting Table on the ground and open it to access the 3X3 crafting grid. The way to do this depends on which version you're playing:

    • PC: Right-click
    • Mobile: Single-tap
    • Xbox: Press LT
    • PlayStation: Press L2
    • Nintendo: Press ZL
  4. Craft your Furnace. Put 8 Cobblestones or Blackstones in the outer boxes (leave the center box empty).

  5. Set the Furnace on the ground and open it to access the smelting menu.

Once you have a Crafting Table, all you need to make a Furnace is the following:

  • 8 Cobblestones or 8 Blackstones (You can't mix-and-match unless you're on Java edition)

To smelt items with your Furnace, you'll also need a source of fuel such as Coal, Wood, or Charcoal.

Use Furnaces in Minecraft to create new items by smelting materials in your inventory. Many items can only be crafted by smelting. For example, smelting Iron Ore yields Iron Ingots, which are required to make a shield.

No matter what you're smelting, the process for using a Furnace in Minecraft is always the same.

  1. Put the item you want to smelt in the top box on the left side of the Furnace menu.

  2. Put a fuel source (e.g. Coal or Wood) in the bottom box on the left side of the Furnace menu.

  3. Wait for the progress bar to fill.

  4. When the process is complete, drag the new item into your inventory.

A Blast Furnace can smelt items twice as fast as a regular Furnace.

  1. Open your Crafting Table and put 3 Iron Ingots In the top row of the 3X3 grid.

To make Iron Ingots, smelt Iron Ores with your Furnace.

  2. In the second row, put an Iron Ingot in the first box, a Furnace in the second box, and an Iron Ingot in the third box.

  3. Put 3 Smooth Stones in the bottom row.

To make Smooth Stones, smelt Cobblestones to make Stones, then smelt the Stones.

  4. Add the Blast Furnace to your inventory.

Thanks for letting us know!

Tell us why!

Furnaces can be fuelled by any wooden objects and tools, coal, charcoal, and buckets of lava.

2. Which fuel is fastest for smelting?

All fuel currently smelts at the same pace in the furnace; the speed at which a block smelts is more dependent on the block it’s being smelted in. For example, smokers and blast furnaces cook and smelt twice as fast as a regular furnace.

The main aspect of different fuels is their durability and longevity in a furnace. Wood and wooden tools can only smelt for a short amount of time. Coal is the preferred method of smelting as it can cook for an extended period of time and can be found in abundance underground. A stack of coal can smelt approximately 80 blocks, whereas one bucket of lava smelts 100 blocks.

3. What ores can you smelt in a furnace?

Any mined ore that stays in its ore form (like iron, gold, and netherite, for example) have to be smelted down in order to be used in their intended way. Ores like redstone, diamond, and coal do not need to be smelted unless they are mined with a silk touch pickaxe.

4. What foods can you cook in a furnace?

Furnaces are used to cook raw meats like beef, chicken, mutton, rabbit, and a variety of fish. Cooked meat has a much better saturation level than its raw counterpart, so it is beneficial for you to cook your meat before you eat it, especially if you are low on hunger.

5. Is the furnace the most efficient smelter and cooker?

Up until the Village and Pillage Update that occurred in early 2019, the furnace was the most efficient smelter and cooker. Now, however, smokers and blast furnaces can be used to cook and smelt, respectively, twice as fast than a regular furnace. Regular furnaces are used in each of these blocks’ crafting recipes.
