How to install mods on Minecraft Java Fabric

Fabric is a mod launcher which is available for Minecraft, typically on the later versions. It’s popularity is rapidly growing, due to the speed at which updates are received and the performance improvements it generally provides over Forge.

This guide will cover how to install Fabric, and how to start installing mods for it. It’s great for both beginners and intermediates alike. Even though this guide was created during Minecraft 1.17, it should be the same process for all future versions.

Step 1: Install Fabric

To start, we’ll need to install Fabric, which is the tool that allows Minecraft to run with mods. Press the button below, which will take you to Fabrics official website (or click here). To start downloading Fabric, press the ‘Download Installer (Universal/Jar) button.

A .jar file will start to download, which is the installer. Open it, and you’ll see a screen similar to the image below. If it doesn’t open, make sure you have Java installed, or you can try the .exe file instead. Before progressing, make sure the Minecraft Launcher is closed! Tools like the Forge and Fabric installers won’t work if the Launcher is open already.

There’s two tabs at the top, with Client meaning single player, and server meaning multiplayer. Under the client tab, select the version of Minecraft that you want to install Fabric for, which is 1.17.1 in my case. Loader version can remain how it is, and you just need to make sure the ‘Select Install Location’ field points towards your Minecraft directory, which it should be by default.

When you’re ready, press the Install button. After a few seconds or minutes depending on your hardware, Fabric should be installed, and you can check if it’s done so inside the Minecraft Launcher, which you should now be opening.

In the dropdown in the bottom left corner, you should see an option for Fabric. Select it, and press the PLAY button in the launcher so that Fabric can create all the configuration and other necessary files it needs.

Minecraft should eventually load up to the main menu like it always does, but this time it’s running with Fabric. Now we can install some mods.

Step 2: Install Mods

Before installing mods, we need to make sure Minecraft isn’t running again. One of the first mods we’ll install is Fabric API, as it’s required by most mods to function. You can download Fabric API here from CurseForge.

To download a mod from CurseForge, you can press the orange download button on the right side of the screen, under the ‘Recent Files’ section. Make sure you choose the correct version. Alternatively, you can go to the ‘Files’ tab at the top of the mod page, and download it from there.

Where to Place Mods

A .jar file will be downloaded, which is the mod. You don’t want to open this, instead, you need to head to your Minecraft installation directory. There are two easy ways to get there:

1. Open your Start Menu, type %AppData% (with the percentage symbols) and press Enter. This will bring you to your Roaming folder, which should have a .minecraft folder inside. And inside the .minecraft folder, there’s a mods folder which is where we need to place the .jar we just downloaded.
2. Or, you can open Minecraft, go to Options > Resource Packs > Open Pack Folder. This brings you to your resourcepacks folder, which is inside your minecraft directory. You need to go up a level, so you’re in the Minecraft directory, and then go into the mods folder and place your .jar in there.

That should mean our first mod is installed, but we won’t notice any differences in-game. One mod we can try out is William Wyther’s Overhauled Overworld, which is available for Minecraft 1.16/1.17 with Fabric. Like the previous mod, download it for your version, and place it into your mods folder.

When you launch Minecraft again, start a new world. With the Overhauled Overworld mod installed, the world should look very different, with a lot of biomes being changed quite a lot.

What Next?

Now, you can start installing any mods you want. Just make sure they’re for the correct version of Minecraft.

Sometimes, some mods have dependencies, which are other mods they rely on to run. On a mods page on CurseForge, you can check the relations tab at the top of the screen to see if it has any requirements. Occasionally, when you launch Minecraft with lots of mods, errors might pop up saying a mod is missing. Or you might get Error Code 0, which also means a dependency is missing.

If you're looking to install Fabric mods with Forge, we have some bad news for you. Unfortunately, Fabric and Forge are two different and incompatible APIs. Additionally, the mods for the two platforms also conflict, making it impossible to install Fabric mods with Forge.

It is also essential to remember that you cannot install both mod loaders at the same time. If you're using Forge and trying to load mods for Fabric, they won't work.

If you're having trouble deciding which one to install, it's helpful to figure out which one best suits your needs. Forge is specifically designed for use with Minecraft and is not compatible with other Java-based games. If you want to play other Java games, Fabric might be a better option because it loads mods for Minecraft and other games. And while you can only use Fabric for modding purposes, it is compatible with all versions of Minecraft.

How to Install Fabric Mods in TLauncher

If you have the latest version of TLauncher and want to incorporate Fabric mods to change your game, here's how:

1. Choose the version of the Fabric installer you want to use https://fabricmc.net/use/.
   
   
2. Download the JAR/Universal installer.
   
   
3. Once downloaded, run the installer.
   
   
4. In the installation window that opens, make sure the "Client" tab is selected.
   
   
5. Choose the version of the game you want from the "Minecraft Version" drop-down menu. And the loader version in the applicable menu.
   
   
6. In the 'Install Location' bar, enter the following: 'C:UsersyourusernameAppDataRoaming.minecraft'.Where it says "your username," enter your device username instead.
   

7. Check the “Create a profile” box.
   
   
8. Click on “Install”.
   
   
9. Once the installation is complete, open TLauncher.
   
   
10. Navigate down the screen. Click on the drop-down menu and select "Fabric-Loader" from the options.
    
    

Fabric installation is complete and you can start playing your game.

It's important to note that most mods will also require the Framework API to work, so you'll need to download that and add the file to the "Mods" folder in your Minecraft directory (C:UsersyourusernameAppDataRoaming.minecraft).

Then you will need to download the mods you want to use. There are various places where you can find mods, one of the most reputable sources being CurseForge. Here is how to install mods on TLauncher:

1. Navigate to your Minecraft directory (C:UsersyourusernameAppDataRoaming.minecraft) and open the "Mods" folder. If you don't have one, create one now.
   
   
2. Download the JAR file of the mods you want and save it in the "Mods" folder.
   
   
3. Open TLauncher and start the game using your Fabric profile.
   
   

How to Install Fabric Mods on Mac

If you want to sideload Fabric mods on your Mac, you need to install Fabric first. Here are the steps to follow:

1. Download the Fabric installer from https://fabricmc.net/use/.
   
   
2. Once downloaded, open the Fabric installer and make sure the "Client" tab is selected at the top.
   
   
3. Select the Minecraft version and Loader version you want to install from the corresponding drop-down menus. (We suggest sticking to the latest version of the loader.)
   
   
4. Make sure your install location is set correctly. It should look like this: ~/Library/Application Support/Minecraft.
   
   
5. Make sure the "Create profile" box is selected.
   
   
6. Click on the “Install” button, and once the installation is complete, click on “OK”.
   
   
7. Open your Minecraft launcher. Your new Fabric profile should be automatically selected. You can now click on “Play”.
   
   

Now that Fabric is installed, you can start installing the various mods you want to use. Here's how to go about it:

1. Download the mods you want to use from a platform like CurseForge.
   
   
2. Once the mods are downloaded, navigate to your Minecraft installation folder (it should look like this: ~/Library/Application Support/Minecraft) and locate the “Mods” folder.
   
   
3. If you don't have a "Mods" folder, create one by clicking "New Folder" at the top of the window, then name it "Mods."
   
   
4. Open this “Mods” folder. Save downloaded JAR files for your mods in this folder.
   
   
5. You can now open your Minecraft launcher and start playing using your Fabric profile.
   
   

How to Install Fabric Mods on Windows

Installing Fabric mods on your Windows PC is relatively straightforward, although you will need to install Fabric before you can use the mods:

1. Download the Fabric mod loader installer from https://fabricmc.net/use/.
   
   
2. Run the installer file on your computer. When the installation window opens, make sure the "Client" tab is selected.
   
   
3. Choose the Minecraft version you want to use, then choose the Loader version from the applicable menu.
   
   
4. Verify that "Installation Location" is set correctly. It should look like this on a Windows PC: C:/Users/(username)/AppData/Roaming/.minecraft.
   
   
5. Make sure you have checked the "Create a profile" box.
   
   
6. Click on "Install" and then on "OK".
   
   
7. Open your Minecraft launcher and your Fabric profile should already be selected. Click "Play" to start your game.
   
   

Now that Fabric is installed, it's time to install the Fabric mods:

1. Browse the web (we suggest sites like CurseForge) and find the mods you want and download them.
   
   
2. Locate your Minecraft installation folder on your PC. It should look something like this: C:/Users/(username)/AppData/Roaming/.minecraft. From there, open the “Mods” folder.
   
   
3. If you don't have a "Mods" folder, create one now.
   
   
4. Copy the JAR files of your downloaded mods to this folder.
   
   
5. Once done, open your Minecraft launcher. Start the game in your Fabric profile.|
