Why is steve os voice like that

Not sure if it was brought up in the interview because I fast forward past those but he sounded terrible. He always had a scratchy voice but never this bad. It sounds health related. Just wanted to know if anyone had any info on that.

MTV‘s Jackass daredevil Steve-O‘s raspy voice may be one of his well-known traits but it didn’t get that way because of the drugs, swallowing glass, or breathing fire.

He recently wondered how his voice became so hoarse and embarked upon an exploration exercise. “Honestly, I always thought that my world record for barfing the most on television might have something to do with it,” Steve-O shared in a recent YouTube video.

“God, I was a f**king maniac. I mean, chewing and swallowing glass …that couldn’t have been good for my voice,” he pondered.  Steve-O believes his voice has gotten worse so he eventually consults with a medical professional.

Was Steve-O born this way?

Steve-O thinks he knows what happened to his voice. “But out of all the drug use, what I thought did the most damage to my voice was the nitrous oxide,” he said. “God, I did so much of that stuff. I would buy 600 at a time, and that would only last me 24 to 36 hours. Sheesh!”

So was it the nitrous? Dr. J. Randolph Schnitman, a physician who specializes in disorders of the ear, nose, and throat examined Steve-O and came to only one conclusion: Steve-O doesn’t use his vocal cords to make sounds but instead uses a muscle in his throat.

“Really, doc?” Steve-O said, surprised. “After everything I’ve been through, you’re just telling me I just suck at talking.” Steve-O could change his voice with therapy and training. But he’s not sure he wants to change it.

“But I don’t even know if I want my voice to change,” he said. “I kind of like getting recognized over the phone—and my girl darn sure doesn’t want anything different. But I’m still going to give it hell because maybe I can use it in a more healthy way.”

While Steve-O’s voice is au naturel, comedian Artie Lange destroyed his nose from inadvertently snorting crushed glass along with crushed OxyContin tablets. Fans noticed that Lange’s nose seemed smashed or deflated in 2018. He addressed his appearance on Twitter. “This is it but I believe her nose had a septum and had not been hideously deformed due to over 3 decades of drug abuse,” he wrote.

“My nose looks like it got hit w 32 yrs of gambling drugs booze strippers Whores,” he shared on Twitter. “Good women Bad women Loved ones dying. Loved ones leaving stand up Comedy The road Movies TV radio books /dreams coming true. Dreams not /anger jails rehabs mental wards detoxes cigarettes & fun.”

Botched surgeon Dr. Paul Nassif offered to fix Lange’s nose. But he had a stern warning. “When you have a lot of trauma to the septum, the septum is a partition that divides the left and the right nasal cavity,” Nassif told TMZ.  “Because if I go and rebuild that nose, and I have to use tissue from the scalp.” However, Lange cannot do drugs ever again. “Because if we fix his nose and he introduces drugs into the nose again, it will collapse, but this time only worse,” Nassif said.

Steve-O has been many things over the years — a stuntman, a clown, a comedian, and now, a YouTube personality. Throughout all of that, however, the jester of "Jackass" has maintained an unforgettable element to his character.

No, we aren't talking about his self-endangerment or drug use. He (thankfully) kicked the latter of those years ago, and he still loves to put himself in harm's way for the enjoyment of others. Instead, we're talking about Steve-O's iconic voice. With a cadence that sounds like a packet of saltines being blended into a gravel smoothie, Steve-O has become almost as recognizable by ear as he is by eye.

Most people wouldn't be surprised by this. Steve-O has been known for his excessive drinking, smoking, and vomiting (none of which are particularly good for one's voice) for the bulk of his career. However, you'd be surprised to learn that none of those things are the real reason that Steve-O's voice is so gravely. No, what really happened to Steve-O's voice is much more mundane than you would expect from such a wild personality.

As it turns out, Steve-O's iconic rasp wasn't born from any illness or mistreatment. Instead, it sounds that way simply because he learned to speak differently from the rest of us. In a now-deleted video posted on his YouTube channel, Steve-O described how he spent years of his life looking for the root cause of his rasp. Eventually, a specialized throat doctor inserted a camera into his throat, and the medical professional noticed that Steve-O used a different throat muscle — instead of his vocal cords, like most people do — in order to form phonetic sounds (per Men's Health).

Oddly enough, Steve-O's throat is apparently in good condition for a man that has been using it incorrectly his entire life. Even so, Steve-O elected to hire a vocal coach to help teach him to use his vocal cords the way they were meant to be used. However, he also said he preferred his natural voice, as it is one of the many iconic things that helped him in his long and storied career. As Steve-O explained, "I don't even know if I want my voice to change. I kind of like getting recognized over the phone — and my girl darn sure doesn't want anything different. But I'm still going to give it hell because maybe I can use it in a more healthy way."

Watch on

Steve-O’s voice is pretty iconic. With an easily-identifiable rasp, the entertainer and stunt performer practically chokes out words while speaking. It’s enough to make anyone’s throat sore.

But why exactly does the Jackass star’s voice sound the way it does? In a new YouTube video, Steve-O delves into the great mystery at length, exploring every possible option. Seriously, every option.

“Honestly, I always thought that my world record for barfing the most on television might have something to do with it,” Steve-O says in the video.

He adds, “God, I was a fucking maniac. I mean, chewing and swallowing glass—that couldn’t have been good for my voice.” Spoiler alert: Even that ain’t the reason. But neither is his passion for breathing fire, or his past cocaine, crystal meth and PCP use.

“But out of all the drug use, what I thought did the most damage to my voice was the nitrous oxide," he says. "God, I did so much of that stuff. I would buy 600 at a time, and that would only last me 24 to 36 hours. Sheesh!"

But Steve-O is now in recovery—yet his voice continues to “get worse.” So he went to Dr. J. Randolph Schnitman, MD—an otolaryngologist to the stars who regularly consults with top artists like Mariah Carey, Katy Perry, Ozzy Osbourne, and Linkin Park—to find the reason behind the rasp.

After looking at Steve-O’s vocal cords, the doctor comes back with a solid answer. Apparently Steve-O uses a throat muscle to choke out sound, not his vocal chords as he should.

“Really, doc?" Steve-O says. "After everything I’ve been through, you’re just telling me I just suck at talking." Since finding out that he sucks at talking, Steve-O has been working with a voice coach to retrain his voice to speak with his vocal chords and not his throat muscles (and videos of the session are pretty hilarious).

“But I don’t even know if I want my voice to change," Steve-O concludes. "I kind of like getting recognized over the phone—and my girl darn sure doesn’t want anything different. But I’m still going to give it hell because maybe I can use it in a more healthy way.”
