Cowboys are contenders and DeMarcus Lawrence is a big reason why

Who won the dallas football game today

The general point for the Cowboys enthusiast is the reason you try to be steady at the helm is that Sunday night was a great indicator of an indisputable truth; regardless of where they end up in seeding and who the opponents turn out to be, the Cowboys have as good a chance as anyone in this NFC to represent the conference in the Super Bowl. They wake up Monday as the No. 2 seed with an 11-4 record and are in very strong health across the board with impressive depth. And yes, the defense is scary good.

Think about this, with almost no major pieces lost to injury for the year, Dallas finds itself within two weeks of the finish line having scored more points than any team, having amassed more yards than any team, and having more takeaways than any team in the NFL.

That is what a heavyweight contender looks like. It looks like DeMarcus Lawrence joining the team in December and basically triggering a full-level promotion from a very good defense to a borderline elite defense with his addition to the mix. Now, this will only be proven or disproven in the weeks to come because Taysom Hill and Taylor Heinicke are not built to test this theory, but the ability to add a premier edge to the Micah Parsons and Randy Gregory partnership that was already present has been stunning.

Cowboys have bigger goals in mind

While several Cowboys players wore their NFC East championship hats and T-shirts during postgame interviews, it was clear that they aren’t satisfied with that achievement.

“We’re just showing that we’re staying hungry,” Micah Parsons said, wearing his NFC East hat, “and that we’re not alligators, who get paralyzed after we eat.”

The goal has been stated many times by several different members of the organization since training camp. The Cowboys have a team capable of reaching the Super Bowl. They currently hold the No. 2 spot in the NFC playoffs with two games to go, trailing the Green Bay Packers by one game for the top spot. The division title means they will be seeded no lower than fourth.

Next Sunday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals will be a better pre-playoff test than Sunday night’s meeting with Washington.

“Win in the playoffs,” DeMarcus Lawrence said. “Make it to the Super Bowl. Win the Super Bowl.”

A night to forget for Washington

Washington labored in every way possible Sunday night. Well, right after winning the coin toss. They deferred possession until the second half. They postponed playing respectable football for all four quarters.

The NFC East-champion Cowboys (11-4) bullied their archrivals, took their lunch money and pride, not to mention effectively ending any postseason hopes for Washington (6-9). They also turned the Burgundy and Gold against each other.

"I don't think it takes a rocket scientist — if you look at how that game went, I mean, emotions are hot. Things are hot. Things happen," said Jonathan Allen, who was seen throwing a punch at fellow defensive lineman and college teammate Daron Payne on the sideline.

Payne downplayed the encounter with Allen. "I mean, you got brothers?" Payne said. "Y'all fight, don't you? Shit happens."

Washington scores a touchdown

It's a weird play that you'll have to check out for yourself on the highlight below if the NFL social media team posts it.

John Bates caught the pass from Kyle Allen, fumbled it, recovered it and then didn't gain possession of the ball until he had crossed the goal line. Honestly, seemed like the NFL replay center wanted to go home. They did review the call but just a weird play and call overall.

Washington Football Team's next name

It's been a while since we've heard any kind of update on what the next name of the Washington Football Team. It's been reported that the team won't be WFT past this season.

Here's the eight finalists that were revealed by Tanya Snyder.

  • Red Hogs
  • Defenders
  • Armada
  • Presidents
  • Brigade
  • Commanders
  • Red Wolves
  • Washington Football Team

If I had to put betting odds on the new team name, I'd make Commanders the favorite with Red Wolves and Armada closely behind.

Looks like a decent amount of the starters are still in the game for Dallas including Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott.

Some of us facing Cowboys offensive players in fantasy football semifinals would like for them to find the bench soon. Cowboys fans would probably appreciate that too. There's no reason to keep them in this game and risk injury.

Obviously, everyone is piling onto the Washington Football Team because the Sunday Night Football cameras caught a fight between Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne on the sidelines. And Washington is losing 42-7 at halftime and Washington is everyone's favorite franchise to pick on.

Cowboys have room to go from good to great

And Amari Cooper sees himself as a key to that. He said he needs more opportunities Thursday, adding:

“It’s very frustrating,” Cooper said. “But that’s not something I can really control. But I do think there’s a benefit in me getting the ball in those important situations, like red zone and third down, because I know what I’m going to do. I’m just going to stay ready for when that time comes. Hopefully, it’s soon.”

How DeMarcus Lawrence has taken the Cowboys' defense to a new level

DeMarcus Lawrence is back and he is wrecking things. There was a play early in this game in New Jersey on Sunday that demonstrates what this all means. You see, Lawrence is one of the most productive defensive edges in the NFL in the past five years even though his own fan base often questions his quality. This, of course, is all the more remarkable when you consider that he has never really had much help with him.

Standig: What I'm expecting from WFT tonight

Washington has reached the win-or-focus-on-next-year portion of its regular season after consecutive losses and massive roster upheaval.

The reserve/COVID-19 list, which included 26 players over the past two-plus weeks has shrunk to five entering Sunday. Pro Bowl right Brandon Scherff and every-down linebacker Cole Holcomb along with two assistant coaches will be unavailable.

Safety Landon Collins went on a different list Friday, the dreaded injured reserve with a foot injury. Washington also ruled out cornerback William Jackson (calf) for the rematch with Dallas and placed safety Deshazor Everett on the non-football injury list after he was hospitalized following a fatal car crash Thursday night.

All of this is occurring on a short week following Tuesday's 27-17 loss at Philadelphia. Reinforcements in the secondary arrived Friday as cornerback Kendall Fuller and safety Kamren Curl cleared COVID-19 protocols.

The return of quarterback Taylor Heinicke re-opens the playbook for offensive coordinator Scott Turner. However, Washington managed only 224 yards in the first Dallas meeting as Heinicke labored (11 of 25 passes, 122 yards) before exiting with knee and elbow injuries. Running back Antonio Gibson is active despite a toe injury that kept him out of practice all week.

Machota: Will the Cowboys hold anything back? Don't count on it

There is a belief among some that since the Cowboys have been in position to make the playoffs for several weeks that their offense could be holding some things back on purpose. Why show everything in your bag if you don’t need it to beat teams that you’re a double-digit favorite against?

Dallas clinched a postseason berth Thursday night when the San Francisco 49ers dropped to 8-7 with a 20-17 loss to the Tennessee Titans.

The Cowboys (10-4) are currently the No. 2 seed in the NFC playoffs and still have a shot at the No. 1 seed. Dallas is a game-and-a-half back of the Green Bay Packers with three games remaining.

The issue with saving anything on offense is that the Cowboys have struggled to find a rhythm on that side of the ball for the better part of the last two months. An offense that was averaging 27 first downs, 34 points and 460 yards per game during the first six games has averaged 19 first downs, 25 points and 352 yards over the last seven games. It seems that if there were any plays that could potentially spark the offense, they'd use them immediately.

But would they save some things for the playoffs without trying them first in the regular season?

“It’s a great question,” Cowboys offensive coordinator Kellen Moore said this week. “I mean, we’re still trying to win games, so if something helps us win a game, I feel like we’ll utilize it. If we ever get into a different situation, then we’ll obviously handle it differently. But to me, we’re just trying to win ball games.”

The dangerously opportunistic Dallas defense

Dallas has 31 takeaways this season, tied with Indianapolis for the most in the NFL. Dallas has had at least four takeaways in each of their past three games, all wins. If the Cowboys get four more against Washington, they will become the fourth team since 1990 to force at least four turnovers in four consecutive games.

And the player who has generated one-third of those takeaways, cornerback Trevon Diggs, could hit his own milestone against Washington. With a league-leading 11th today, he will become the seventh player in the Super Bowl era and first since Dallas’ Everson Walls in 1981, with at least 11 interceptions in a single season.

With Diggs and rookie linebacker Micah Parsons, who has 12 sacks this season, Dallas is the sixth team since 1990 to have both a player with at least 10 interceptions and a player with at least 10 sacks in a season, joining the 2007 Chargers, 2005 Jets, 2001 Buccaneers, 2001 Browns and 1990 Bears.

How big is the gap between the Cowboys and WFT?

At 10-4, Dallas is one game behind projected No. 1 seed Green Bay. The Cowboys aren’t heading to the playoffs with smoke and mirrors but rather stars shining bright at the main building-block positions that teams covet: quarterback, left tackle, edge rusher, cornerback and wide receiver.

The postseason is about beating whichever teams reach that coveted part of the calendar. To win annually, teams must defeat their division rivals above all. Right now for Washington, that means figuring out how to rival the Cowboys roster. Right now, they do not.

“I think if we are being honest the Cowboys have them at every spot,” one longtime NFL pro personnel executive said.

The Athletic spoke this week with four NFL personnel executives whose teams played Washington and Dallas this season or who scouted games involving one or the other. The conversations focused mainly on the respective rosters at those premium positions. There’s a must-win contest for Washington this weekend, but the real game is gaining on the Cowboys for the long haul.
