TEAM LEBRON TEAM DURANT Team LeBron wins it, 163-160 - with the man himself hitting the game winner. Tragically, Kevin Durant was not there to captain his team after his his grandmother, Barbara Davis, passed away a few hours before the game. I have to say, the Elam ending - where the teams play to a target rather than a clock - continues to create exciting finishes. Would it work in the NBA? Would they ever try? Who knows, but it would probably be a welcome improvement from the tedium of non-stop free throws in the last two minutes of a game when a team is up by between four and eight points. If you were only half-watching and didn't catch the scoring system's explanation - at the end of the third quarter, 24 points (in honour of Kobe Bryant) are added to the team that is currently winning's score, and the first team to that marker wins the game. The idea was formed by Nick Elam, a professor at Ball State University while watching a game drag out in the dying minutes back in 2004. Anyway, thanks for following along - we'll see you next time. No surprises given his 50-point performance with some utterly ridiculous shots. Although, given the Cavaliers/Warriors rivalry, he cops a few boos as he comes up to accept the Kobe Bryant Trophy. This is his first All Star MVP. "Very humbled, very blessed and I really appreciate it," he said afterwards. "It's obviously great - when I get going, the energy gets up and I think the game kind of turned in the right direction too." In his home town, LeBron seals the game! With his team up 161-160, he nails a fadeaway for a long two over both Zach LaVine and Joel Embiid to seal the win! A picturebook ending, given where this game was. "It's only fitting, right? The king would come home to his castle, and say game," Reggie Miller said on commentary. Steph Curry finished with 50 points. And here we go! The first team to 163 will win the game! Steph Curry drains his SIXTEENTH three-pointer and Team LeBron currently lead, 147-143. Steph is putting on a show out there! Just before the nine minute mark he hits a sweet stepback three, and then another, more conventional one on the next possession - both from near the three-point line. But not content with that, he launches a 37-footer a minute later and then a 33-footer on the next exchange - and swishes both. The crowd was on its feet as he uncorked one from 43 feet, but just missed it. He's now a staggering 14-19 from downtown. Wow. Michael Jordan is in the building! Despite being at the Daytona 500 race earlier today, Jordan arrived in time for the half-time ceremony, honouring the 'NBA 75' for the top 75 players to ever play the game. Aside from the formalities, he exchanged a long embrace with LeBron James - the two, of course, have constantly been compared to one another in the GOAT debate. Jordan's arrival, coming just after the likes of Magic Johnson, Allen Iverson and plenty more, blew the roof off the arena in Cleveland. Team Durant takes out the second quarter 49-43 and takes a 94-93 lead on the aggregate score for the All-Star Game. The lead came despite an explosion from Warriors star Stephen Curry, who has raced into All-Star Game MVP contention. The greatest three-point marksman in NBA history has drilled eight out of his 11 three-point attempts and has 24 points at the half to comfortably lead all scorers. Embiid is the leading scorer for Team Durant with 17 points on 7-of-9 from the field. We saw Trae Young and Ja Morant connect on an alley-oop in the first quarter, but this one might be even better! It was once again a brilliant pass from Young, who is up to a game-high seven assists, but Morant's athleticism once again jumped off the TV screen. The Grizzlies point guard, who is only 191 cm tall, caught the ball before spilling 360 degrees mid-air and then finished it with a two-handed slam dunk. The fans have seen enough and the message is clear: Ja Morant needs to be in the 2023 dunk contest by any means possible. February 20, 2022 at 9:40 PM EST Enjoy flying under the radar while you can, Taylor JenkinsSo I'm grabbing some quick food at one of the arena's concession stands when I saw a familiar NBA face amid the concourse crowd. A big, burly white dude with a thick beard who seemed to be studying the menu, and who was able to move in anonymity without being bothered by any of the fans who surrounded him. Any guesses on which incognito man it might be? Third-year Memphis coach Taylor Jenkins. Considering what the Grizzlies are doing this season, with a 41-19 record that has them third in the West behind Phoenix and Golden State and with a budding superstar in Ja Morant leading the way, it's pretty wild that Jenkins wasn't out there signing autographs or taking pictures. Such is the small-market life in today's NBA. February 20, 2022 at 9:33 PM EST Steph continues to make historyAt this point can you really even be surprised anymore? Steph's six threes in a quarter and eight threes in the first half are an NBA All-Star record. He's only two away from claiming the record for most in an All-Star Game. Safe to say he'll get the job done? I think so. February 20, 2022 at 9:24 PM EST Kevin McHale didn't get the memoA lighter moment to share from Cleveland on this night where the league is honoring the 75 greatest players of all time. As I was making my way from the media hotel to the Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse this afternoon, I jumped on the elevator and saw a fun exchange between Bill Walton and Kevin McHale. True to his Boston legend brand, McHale was rocking a bright green Celtics jacket when he noticed that Walton had a more generic '75' jacket. McHale asked Walton about where he got his coat, to which he replied that it was apparently the one they were all told to wear. "Oh shit," McHale said with a laugh. More like oh well.
