NFC Week 17 overreactions: Packers clinch top seed, setting up Super Bowl run

Mackenzie Salmon 'overreacts' to the biggest storylines in the NFC after Week 17 action in the NFL.

A pair of playoff-bound division foes square off on Saturday night with mostly pride on the line when the Dallas Cowboys visit the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Cowboys (11-5) have clinched the NFC East title, but they are pretty much locked into the conference's No. 4 playoff seed after a 25-22 loss to Arizona last week snapped their four-game winning streak. Dallas will be without a key cog in the offense after wide receiver Michael Gallup suffered a torn ACL in the loss.

The Eagles (9-7) looked to be out of the postseason picture a month ago, but a four-game winning streak has guaranteed them either the No. 6 or No. 7 seed. Led by their league-leading rushing attack (160.4 yards/game), the Eagles seem to be peaking at the right time. However, they had 12 players go on the COVID-19 list on Tuesday.

The Eagles will conclude their first regular-season slate under head coach Nick Sirianni on a Saturday night.

The NFL has moved the Eagles’ season finale against the Dallas Cowboys at Lincoln Financial Field to Saturday, Jan. 8, at 8:15 p.m. ET. ESPN and ABC will broadcast the prime-time matchup.

The game was originally scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 9, at 1 p.m. ET on FOX.

The Eagles clinched a playoff spot on Sunday night. The Eagles defeated the Washington Football Team, 20-16, in the early slate of games, and then received help from the San Francisco 49ers and Green Bay Packers, who won their respective matchups in the evening.

The Eagles started 2-5, but are now 9-7 and will return to the playoffs for the fourth time in five years. The Cowboys (11-5) lost to the Arizona Cardinals, 25-22, on Sunday, and are now positioned in the fourth seed in the NFC Playoff Picture. The Eagles own the seventh seed, despite clinching their playoff spot ahead of the 49ers and Saints, who remain in the hunt. The 49ers own the sixth spot in the NFC Playoff Picture.

With the Cowboys no longer vying for the top spot in the NFC, and the Eagles clinched for a playoff spot, both teams could rest some notable players on Saturday in hopes of recharging for a playoff run. That outlook might have forced the league to push the game to Saturday.

The Eagles are 3-4 at home this season. The team has won four consecutive games heading into Week 18.

The Dallas Cowboys will have their last game of the regular season this Saturday, January 8, against the Philadelphia Eagles, in a game that promises to be one for the books between the two best teams in the Eastern Division of the National Conference.

Although the game was scheduled for Sunday noon, the NFL announced the change of date of the meeting between the Cowboys and the Eagles for prime time on Saturday night.

Both the Cowboys and Eagles look to improve their position for the Playoffs, as both franchises have already secured their place in the Postseason, Dallas as a division champion and Philadelphia as a wild card.

Where to watch the game

The match between these two teams will be played on Saturday, January 8, 2022 at 17:15 Pacific Time at the Lincoln Financial Field. You can watch on ESPN or online with the NFL Game Pass.

Dallas and Philadelphia have gone head to head in 125 games, including four in the postseason. The Cowboys have an advantage with a record 71 wins, while the Eagles have been victorious in 54 games. In the last five games, the home team is the one who has imposed their conditions.

During Sunday's game between the Dallas Cowboys and the Arizona Cardinals, wide receiver Michael Gallup suffered an injury that led him to leave the field. A knee injury has been confirmed. With this injury, Dallas loses an important player and will be a crucial loss heading into the Playoffs.

And just like that, the Cowboys are now on a short week.

After losing what Dallas might have hoped would be a statement game to the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday afternoon, the Cowboys were dealt a little bit more potentially frustrating news Sunday night. The NFL announced that the Cowboys' regular season finale against the Philadelphia Eagles will be flexed from Sunday at Noon to a primetime Saturday night matchup (January 8), meaning the Cowboys will have to travel to Philadelphia on a short week.

The game is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. (CT) on ESPN/ABC at Lincoln Financial Field.

While the Cowboys have already clinched the NFC East and the Eagles will have already clinched a playoff spot, both teams could improve their playoff seeding in the final game of the year depending on how other matchups next weekend play out.

The Cowboys beat the Eagles 41-21 back in Week 3, but Philadelphia has won four straight and six of their last seven games coming into the NFL's first ever Week 18.

While the NFL's primary motivation in leaving scheduling flexibility heading into the season's final weekend is so that they can prioritize meaningful games that have some sort of playoff implications, it is possible that they are also looking ahead to which Wild Card games might potentially be scheduled on a Saturday the following week. By making the Cowboys and Eagles on a Saturday night Week 18 matchup, the NFL could be planning to schedule the Cowboys' first playoff game on the following Saturday (January 15) as well.

Either way, a silver lining and potential advantage for the Cowboys is that while they will have a short week coming up, after traveling back from Philadelphia they will have seven or eight days to prepare for their first playoff game.
