What to expect from the 49ers vs. Rams game?
The 49ers WR group is doing everything in their power to help this offense move down the field consistently. In Week 18, a couple of Brandon Aiyuk’s receptions set up a field goal as the seconds waned off the clock in the first half. However, San Francisco’s WR1 currently bears the most weight. WR Deebo Samuel has become the late-season catalyst for the 49ers’ offense.
Since Week 10, Shanahan has made an effort to work Samuel into the rushing attack as a ball carrier. He saw 53 carries over the last eight games of the regular season for an average of 6.47 yards per carry. Samuel also scored 7 touchdowns on the ground alone during that stretch. All the while, the dual-threat WR continues to be a weapon in the passing game.
Through two postseason games, Shanahan has had Samuel carry the ball 10 times in each. Should San Francisco’s defense continue to keep opposing offenses in check, it is easy to assume Samuel should get his 10 carries with no problem. Samuel runs hard and aggressive, as evidenced by the tough carries and conversions he’s had this postseason.
But while Samuel’s addition to the rushing game has been game-changing, if Matthew Stafford is throwing bombs all over the field, the 49ers will need QB Jimmy Garoppolo to step up and make the plays he isn’t asked to make too often. That is when things go haywire for the 49ers. Los Angeles keeps offensive momentum from start to finish, and San Francisco won’t have enough answers in this 49ers vs. Rams matchup.
