What kind of missionaries were Machine Gun Kellys parents?

Who’s this MC claiming to be the “Rap Devil”? Welcome to WatchMojo.com, and today we’ll be counting down our picks for the "Top 5 Machine Gun Kelly Facts."

For this list, we’ll be looking at interesting facts and trivia about Cleveland rapper Machine Gun Kelly, also known as MGK.

Machine Gun Kelly’s musical influences extend well beyond the realm of rap, and that’s something that shows both in his music and fashion sense. Among his self-proclaimed biggest influences are rappers like Eminem and DMX, but also rock artists such as Guns N' Roses and Blink-182. He even has an EP named after seminal 80s hardcore punk band, Black Flag. Given his eclectic tastes, it’s not that surprising to learn that MGK’s youth saw him involved in a few musical projects. His first band was the hilariously named “Dumb Bunny Trio.” His focus might be rap these days, but he still works with a backing band, sometimes referred to as the Machine Gun Kelly band or EST 19XX.

When you look at MGK or hear his music, “religious upbringing” isn’t exactly the first thing to come to mind, but religion largely shaped the first few years of his life. He was born in Houston, but then proceeded to travel the globe with his Christian missionary parents, which took him as far as Germany and Egypt. According to Kelly himself, he actually learned to speak Arabic before English. It wasn’t an easy upbringing however. Kelly’s parents split when he was young, his father suffered from mental illness, and Kelly grew up in poverty when they returned to states, for which he was bullied. He would eventually re-connect with his mother later in life.

MGK is and always has been an unconventional rapper. From his fashion sense and tendency to blur the line between genres, to his unabashed love for boutique coffee shops, summery craft beers, and especially almond poppy seed muffins, he’s never been afraid to go against the grain. One of his more particular interests is wrestling, something that, since becoming a celebrity, he’s been able to get actively involved with. He’s actually mixed things up with WWE on a few occasions. He’s promoted Wrestlemania 28 with John Cena, performed on Raw, where he actually briefly fought Kevin Owens, and contributed to the 2017 Tribute to the Troops event.

Over the years, MGK has undeniably embraced the pop side of rap with numerous collaborations, but he’s more than earned his place in the world of hip hop. In 2009, back when he was still a starving artist (apparently on the verge of getting evicted), he proved himself at Harlem’s legendary Apollo Theater, where he won repeat victories at their Amateur Night competition. According to Rolling Stone Magazine, he was the first white rapper to ever do so. It was a turning point in Kelly’s career, increasing his visibility and forcing labels to start paying attention to this upstart from Cleveland.

Say the name Machine Gun Kelly to your grandparents and they might recognize it, but we doubt that it’s Richard Colson Baker that they’ll be thinking of. The original Machine Gun Kelly, George Kelly Barnes, was a notorious criminal from Memphis, Tennessee, most famous for kidnapping an oil tycoon in 1933 for a then sizable ransom of $200,000. As his name suggests, a Thompson submachine gun was his weapon of choice. Baker, for his part, earned the nickname for his early trademark quick delivery of lyrics, which fans compared to the rapid fire of a machine gun.

Machine Gun Kelly Biography

Machine Gun Kelly is an American rapper and actor from Cleveland, Ohio. He was born Richard Colson Baker in Houston on April 22, 1990 to missionary parents. He and his family moved all around the world and had lived everywhere from Egypt to Germany to multiple cities in the United States before he settled in Denver along with his father. His mother left him and his dad when he was still young. Due to his dad's depression and unemployment, young MGK had to endure bullying from other children in the neighborhood.

He then turned to rap music, starting to listen to it in the sixth grade when he was attending Hamilton Middle School, a school with an ethnically diverse student body in Denver, Colorado. The first three rappers that influenced him were Ludacris, Eminem and DMX. He only became more and more interested in the genre after listening to DMX's "We Right Here" from the album "The Great Depression".

MGK's home life was unstable when he was younger as he would regularly fight with his father. When he attended Denver's Thomas Jefferson High School, his father moved to Kuwait to work for the army and left him behind to live in his aunt's basement. During the course of living in the basement, MGK began experimenting with drugs and recorded his first amateur demo tape, "Stamp of Approval".

Following his father's departure to Kuwait, MGK stopped attending school. In 2005, his dad came back to the U.S. to take his son to Kuwait. But they eventually were forced to return stateside and live in Cleveland, where MGK attended Shaker Heights High School. He later earned his moniker Machine Gun Kelly due to his rapid fire delivery and then released his "Stamp of Approval" mixtape in 2006.

The release of the mixtape allowed for his reputation and profile to grow, which allowed MGK to begin performing at local Cleveland venues. The rapper went on to release four other mixtapes before he secured a recording contract with Bad Boy and Interscope Records in 2011.

His major label debut album, "Lace Up", was released in October 2012 to positive response from critics. The record, which contained the singles "Wild Boy", "Invincible", "Stereo" and "Hold On (Shut Up)", debuted at No. 4 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart. In early 2015, he released the singles "Till I Die" and "A Little More" for his second studio album, "General Admission", which came out in October 2015 and also debuted at No. 4 on the albums chart.

MGK scored his biggest single yet in late 2016, after he and Fifth Harmony's Camila Cabello released their collaboration, "Bad Things". The song debuted at No. 80 on Billboard Hot 100 but has been slowly climbing up the chart. It has so far peaked at No. 10, giving both singers their first top 10 hit as solo artists.

The success of "Bad Things" led to him and Camila being nominated for Top Rap Collaboration at the 2017 Billboard Music Awards and Best Collaboration at the 2017 Radio Disney Music Awards. They ended up winning the latter. The single also served as the lead single off his third studio album, "Bloom", which was released on May 12. It debuted at No. 8 on Billboard 200 chart.

Promoting the album, MGK was initially set to open for Linkin Park's "One More Light" tour before it got canceled due to Chester Bennington's suicide. The rapper then paid tribute to the late frontman by releasing an acoustic version of the rock band's hit song "Numb".

MGK released a slew of singles after that, including "Home" featuring X Ambassadors and Bebe Rexha as well as "The Break Up". The former song served as the soundtrack to Netflix's movie "Bright" and peaked at No. 90 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart.

In the following year, MGK started making headlines due to his feud with fellow rappers, Eminem and G-Eazy. He dissed Eazy on a freestyle that he performed during his appearance on Funkmaster Flex Radio, accusing him of making "frat rat" and copying his style. Eazy immediately hit back at him by releasing his own diss track entitled "Bad Boy", but MGK has yet to give his response.

While MGK hasn't responded to Eazy's diss track, he unveiled "Rap Devil" on September 3 in response to Eminem's diss at him on "Not Alike" off "Kamikaze". The song topped iTunes chart on September 10 and September 14. It was additionally included on his new EP "Binge", which was released on September 20.

Machine Gun Kelly may be one of the biggest artists in the world, but he didn't have the easiest childhood - having been abandoned by his mother at age nine and growing up with a single father who suffered from mental health issues.

The 32-year-old singer, whose real name is Colson Baker, was born in Houston to missionary parents, but his mom left home when he was young for another man.

The incident left the hitmaker distraught, with him later admitting, 'I hated and resented that situation so much.'

According to reports, his dad battled depression and couldn't hold a job, leading to him spending most of his childhood in poverty - with the rapper later admitting that he only had two different outfits to wear at one point, and that he sometimes slept in a chair instead of a bed.

After graduating high school, he was kicked out of his home out by his dad. He strenuously worked on creating music while also making burritos at a local Chipotle, and despite being on the verge of getting evicted from his apartment, he somehow landed himself a record deal with P. Diddy's label after he was discovered during a performance.

Flash forward to a decade later, his music has now been listened to by millions of people around the world.

The hitmaker, who is well known for blending hip hop with rock, recently took to Instagram to introduce his estranged mother - whose name has not been announced to the public - to his nine million followers, one year after he revealed that they had reconnected thanks to his fans.

He shared a snap to the platform on Thursday, which showed them sitting cross-legged and leaning into each other, while flashing big smiles at the camera.

He wrote in the caption: 'Introducing … my mom.'

MGK, who donned a blue long-sleeve t-shirt, shorts, and pink sneakers, held up two middle fingers in the snap, while his mother, who kept it casual in a turquoise shirt and black pants, gave a peace sign.

In honor of their reunion, FEMAIL has taken a look back at MGK's childhood trauma - from how he overcame the pain of being abandoned by his mother at such a young age to how he channeled it into his music and became a mega superstar.

'I hated and resented that situation so much,' he once told Genius of his mom leaving.

MGK alluded to the childhood trauma in his 2019 song Burning Memories. The rap song opened with the lyrics: 'Yeah, this one's for the mama that I never knew (never knew), I took acid just to burn all of my memories of you.' He is pictured in 2020

It's been said that his dad, who suffered from depression, was unemployed leading to MGK growing up in poverty, which resulted in him being bullied by his classmates due to his lack of clothing.

'I used to stand out because I was tall and I couldn't really fight back then,' he told First Avenue.

'Then I got tired of getting beat up so I started fighting people with my words instead.'

MGK alluded to the childhood trauma in his 2019 song Burning Memories, which is from his fourth studio album, Hotel Diablo.

The rap song opened with the lyrics: 'Yeah, this one's for the mama that I never knew (never knew), I took acid just to burn all of my memories of you.'

The song later continued: 'How'd you leave your only child at nine for another dude? Took that pain and punched my father in the stomach 'til he bled.

'All the years that you ignored me, left me sleepless in the bed, I hope that he got some kids because your only son is dead.'

He also rapped about it in the track Lately on his EP Binge, saying, 'I’m still dealing with some demons that ain’t really there, grew up a screw up, pierced my ear and dyed my f**king hair.

'In seventh grade, I didn’t even have a bed, I had a chair. The f**k you think I go so hard for, I got out of there.'

MGK and his mom first reconnected last year, and it was actually his fans that inspired him to get back in contact with her.

‘Wild story but after all these years, the fans are responsible for me and my mom finally reconnecting, I love you,’ he tweeted in June 2021.

He and his father also had a strained relationship for many years, with the star tweeting in 2019, 'Flew out to see my dad today. Broke down in my daughter’s arms when I saw him.

MGK, seen as a teen, has previously admitted that he was a 'rule-breaker' in his youth, telling GQ in 2019 that he was a 's***ty son' to his father

'I should’ve told him that I loved him years ago. Breaks my f**king heart that we wasted all this time.'

The rapper announced in July 2020 on social media that his dad had sadly passed away, on the one-year anniversary of the release of Hotel Diablo, which he said resulted in him feeling the worst pain of his life.

‘I had plans for the one year anniversary of Hotel Diablo today.‬ That album was everything I wanted to say and I know it’s close to my fans,' he wrote on social media at the time.

‘But my father took his last breath this morning, and I’ve never felt a pain this deep in my life.‬’

The 32-year-old hitmaker, who welcomed a daughter, named Casie Colson Baker, in 2009 with then-girlfriend Emma Cannon, previously opened up about his teen years, and he apologized to his dad for being a's***ty son' and constant 'rule-breaker.'

'I have such a rule-abiding, amazing daughter and I was such a rule-breaking, s***ty son,' he told GQ in 2019.

'The legal fees, the tens of thousands of dollars from the times I got arrested, the finding out your son missed a whole semester of high school because he was waking up and pretending to go but never going.’

In March 2009, while on the verge of being evicted, he started performing in rap battles at Harlem's Apollo Theater in New York City.

He also recorded music in a makeshift at-home studio, and began to gain attention after he performed on MTV2's Sucker Free Freestyle.

At the time he also worked at Chipotle, which he later called the 'worst job he ever had.'

'Working at Chipotle [was the worst job]. It was the one that my high school [friends] would go to and I was working there right after I graduated,' he told GQ.

'A lot of people when they came back for Christmas from colleges would come in and be like, “Damn! I thought you were supposed to be some big rapper now. What happened?”

'I was getting laughed at constantly and I was thinking, “Maybe I’m just going to be stuck working s***ty jobs forever.”'

MGK released his first debut single, called Alice in Wonderland, in May 2010 via independent record label Block Starz Music.

During that time, he also dropped two mixtapes, and he started performing at Cleveland Cavaliers home games.

'So we're actually two halves of the same soul, I think. And I said that to him almost immediately, because I felt it right away.'
