What is 50/50 topsoil

Our 50/50  compost/topsoil mix is produced and bagged in Cornwall and can simply be used to fill raised beds or raked out as a new topsoil layer.

For landscaping and restoring areas for planting, use the top soil to improve quality or build up existing soil by raking out between 50 – 200 mm in depth of top soil depending upon existing soil quality.

For creating raised beds, simply fill beds to a minimum of 300mm (the deeper the better as this will help retain moisture).

Remember the level will settle after first filled.

For establishing a vegetable patch, simply dig over area and rake out the compost/topsoil mix to a depth of 100 – 200 mm then allow soil to settle for a short period before planting.

Our Compost/topsoil mix is suitable for use all year round and can be delivered using our crane trucks.

I'm new to gardening, and I'm wondering if veg. beds filled with 50% garden soil (Kellogs Organics) and 50% compost is a good mix of soil to get these veggies growing. I've been hearing of all kinds of mixes of soil, and quite frankly, I'm a little confused.

I'm open to any better suggestions of soil mixes.

I'm growing a variety of veggies, mostly zucchini, cucumber, tomatoes, some greens, onions and beets.

Thanks.

I'm about to level and top dress my lawn. Where I need to level won't exceed 2-3" deep to bring it up to level, and the rest of the lawn just needs topdressing and a little smoothing out with a leveling rake.

My local garden center offers a 50/50 mix of compost and topsoil. Should I use this or straight topsoil?

Make sure you allow for at least 1- 2% slope away from the home. I vote for soil that is closest to what you have. Especially on a slope. I would use a shovel and dig and turn over the soil you have allow to dry. Clay makes great soil for lawns that aren't going to be used for sports? Compost plus soil is nice but you won't ever know what is in that soil such as pesticide residue, insects, weed seeds. I would not worry about getting a lot of exotic soil. I'd get the shovel and have one yard of decomposed organic matter spread over the 750 sq. ft @4" deep. Then just dig and turn dig and turn. Allow to dry.

Then I would add an inch of screened topsoil. Rake/grade and ROLL with a water filled roller you can rent. Rake/grade and Roll again. Perhaps again...mark the exact lines for the edge of your lawn, always stay with one radius until you need to change the curve. You can change the radius with each curve just no compound curves.

Lay the sod so the length is perpendicular to the rise in height. After laying and cutting your sod, roll your sod with that roller again going in different directions.

In choosing a soil get the closest to match your own soil. Don't add sand or gypsum or lime. Don't use PEAT. Peat is very acidic. Lawns like neutral to slightly alkaline. Peat is also a finite resource that is threatened...sigh. Dig a trench all around your defined edges...6"X6". Read a bunch of stuff on how to train and grow a lawn that we have right here on this site.

50-50 Blend is a mix of screened sandy loam top soil and Agromin compost 100. Not intended for use in containers or raised bed applications.

50-50 is designed to fill low spots in turf applications and for backfill when planting trees.
