What happened to Leland Dog the Bounty Hunters son?

The injury occurred while Leland Chapman was still in the process of recovering from a previous surgery to his left knee

Leland Chapman was hospitalized after getting injured during a recent manhunt with his father, Duane “Dog” Chapman.

While chasing alleged fugitive Edward Morales in Adams County, Colorado, Leland tore his ACL, a family spokesperson confirmed Wednesday to AL.com, adding that the injury will require surgery.

According to Leland, the injury occurred while he was still recovering from a previous surgery to his left knee.

Speaking with Entertainment Tonight on Wednesday, the 42-year-old bounty hunter shared that he had been “trying to take it easy” and initially chased after Morales in a car.

“My intention was just to cut him off in the park in front of him and just wait because everybody was kinda close behind him. When I pulled in, he made eye contact with me, and I was seeing that this guy is running at slow speed, my speed, you know what I mean? ‘Cause he was tired himself,” he told the outlet, adding that he then made the decision to run after him.

However, the chase didn’t go as planned.

After getting out of the car, Leland says, Morales slammed a gate in Leland’s face, and “instead of opening the gate” he told Entertainment Tonight that he “tried to kick it open.”

“When I went to kick the gate, it kind of flexed and then it completely severed off my Achilles tendon. So it broke. Snapped it right in half,” he explained, adding that when he went to put pressure on his foot it “felt like I was walking on sand.”

Leland went on to share that he was eventually able to “get off one shot on the taser” although he wasn’t the one to actually grab Morales. “But I still slowed him down enough for everybody else to catch him,” he added.

The manhunt, which was filmed for the family’s upcoming show Dog’s Most Wanted, is the first the family has gone on since Beth Chapman died of cancer last month, according to AL.com. The Blast reported that the chase took place on Tuesday, when Morales was booked into Adams County Jail late that evening.

Beth, who battled a stage II throat cancer diagnosis, died at the age of 51 on June 26.

This weekend, Beth’s family, friends and fans will have the chance to say their final farewells at her funeral, which will be streamed live on WGNAmerica.com and the Dog’s Most Wanted Facebook page, according to The Wrap.

Dog announced Beth’s funeral arrangements on Twitter and Facebook, sharing that it will be held at the Heritage Christian Center in Aurora, Colorado, at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Leland Chapman, the son of reality show star Dog the Bounty Hunter, is recovering at an Alabama hospital after being injured during a manhunt.

A spokesperson for Chapman confirmed to AL.com that Chapman, 42, will be out of action for six weeks due to an injury sustained while chasing fugitive Edward Morales. According to his spokesperson, Chapman, who lives in Athens, Alabama, tore his ACL and will require surgery.

Chapman and his father were chasing Morales in Adams County, Colorado when the incident occurred. Morales pleaded guilty to harassment in June and a warrant was issued for his arrest after he failed to appear at a hearing. According to reports, Leland Chapman was injured during the struggle to subdue Morales, who was eventually taken into custody.

The manhunt marked Dog Chapman’s first since his wife and Leland’s stepmother, Beth Chapman, passed away from cancer at the age of 51 on June 26. A memorial service for Beth Chapman is planned for July 13 in Colorado.

The fugitive’s capture was caught on tape for the family’s new show, “Dog’s Most Wanted,” coming soon to WGN.

The 42-year-old tore his ACL while chasing down Edward Morales in Colorado, according to People. He was hospitalized following the accident, which reportedly occurred during the family’s first manhunt since the death of Dog’s wife, Beth Chapman. It was being filmed for their upcoming show, Dog’s Most Wanted.

Unfortunately for Leland, he was still “healing” from a surgery he had just had on his knee. "I was just getting that healed. Just came out of rehab and everything," he told Entertainment Tonight.

He chronicled exactly how the incident went down, sharing that he had gotten into his car to go after Edward, and later decided to pursue him on foot. Eventually, they found themselves on opposite sides of a gate, so Leland “tried to kick it open” in hopes of knocking him down.

“When I went to kick the gate, it kind of flexed and then it completely severed off my Achilles tendon,” he explained. “So it broke. Snapped right in half.”

Leland didn’t give up, though. He “hobbled” after the alleged fugitive, and shot him with a taser, slowing him down enough for the rest of the crew to catch up and capture him.

Though Leland is on the mend, it appears he still has a way to go before he’s 100% better. In a photo from Beth’s memorial, he’s sporting a boot and a crutch.

Chapman was born as son of Duane Chapman Sr. and his first wife, La Fonda Sue Darnall (née Honeycutt).[citation needed]

Chapman spent his early years in Pampa, Texas, but during his teen years, moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado. As a teenager Chapman ran away from home, began skipping school, and joined a gang. Unable to handle him any longer, his mother put him in foster care, although he ran away and he was placed in a boys care home at 13. He was given the choice to go back into foster care or go live with his father and he chose to live with his father.[2]

At seventeen, Chapman began training in boxing and mixed martial arts with the help of his good friend Sonny Westbrook (who has appeared many times on Dog the Bounty Hunter).[3] Leland graduated from high school when he was 18.[4]

Chapman started out working for his father at their family's bail bonds company, Da Kine Bail Bonds. Other family members working for the company include Beth Chapman, Duane Lee Chapman, and "Baby" Lyssa Chapman (Dog's daughter/Leland's half-sister), among others.[citation needed] On September 14, 2006, Leland Chapman was arrested along with Duane "Dog" Chapman and Tim Chapman by U.S. Marshals at the request of the Mexican government and was to be extradited to Mexico to face charges of "deprivation of liberty". The charges stem from an incident in which they were chasing fugitive and serial rapist Andrew Luster, the Max Factor Cosmetics heir. They captured Luster on June 18, 2003 in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Shortly after the capture, the three were themselves arrested by Puerto Vallarta police officers; the three posted bail but never returned to Mexico for their court hearing on July 15, 2003.[5] They were released from custody on bail; Leland and Tim Chapman's bail was set at $100,000 each, while Dog's was set at $300,000. They faced an extradition hearing to Mexico, under the terms of treaties between the United States and Mexico.[6] On the August 4, 2007 episode of Larry King Live, it was announced that the Mexican government had dropped the charges filed against the three bounty hunters.[citation needed]

Chapman, along with his brothers, Duane Lee and Wesley Chapman, formed Chapbros Media. The company launched an iPhone, iPod Touch and website talent contest application called, "Show Off".[7] The company is no longer in business (blog has not been updated since 2009).[8]

The March 21, 2012 episode depicted Duane Lee telling Beth, "You want me fired, you gotta fire me," after which Chapman stated that he was quitting too. In 2012, the two brothers publicly stated that they left the show. In a tweet from Beth she wrote, "It will take 6 weeks to get thru the whole thing tonight's jus [sic] the beginning".[9]

Since leaving the show Leland Chapman operates his own bail bond company, Kama'aina Bail Bonds on the Big Island of Hawaii and runs his father's business, Da Kine Bail Bonds in Oahu. He previously headed Bounty Hunter Tactical Supply Co. after Duane Lee moved to Florida.[10]

In April 2013, Duane "Dog" Chapman's new television show, Dog and Beth: On the Hunt, debuted on CMT. The show features Dog, Beth, and Leland traveling across the country giving bail bondsmen business advice and assisting them with bounties. The pilot episode featured Chapman and Dog working together for the first time since the split in 2012.[citation needed]

Leland moved from Hawaii to Alabama in 2015. In July 2021, he moved back to the Big Island (Hawaii).
