Fences will automatically join together with adjacent fence pieces and gates and smoothly connect to other solid blocks to form an enclosed area. Fences spawn naturally in many of the biomes in which their wood type is found. Fences also spawn on shipwrecks and at woodland mansions. Additionally, many types of stone and brick in Minecraft can be made into walls and perform the same useful or decorative function as a fence. See Stone Walls and Brick Walls. A stone wall is sometimes referred to as a stone fence. Fences can also act as fence posts where you can tie a horse or other animal that is leashed with a lead. Fence GatesFences can also be joined to fence gates. Fence gates can open and close by clicking on the gate with the right mouse button or the use button on other editions. Each type of Wood Fence has a corresponding Fence Gate, e.g. Oak Fence Gate, Dark Oak Fence Gate, Spruce Fence Gate, Jungle Fence Gate and Acacia Fence Gate. This article is about the barrier made out of wood or Nether brick. For the fence-like barrier made out of stone types, see wall. For the openable fence, see Fence Gate. A fence is a barrier block that cannot normally be jumped over, similar to a wall. Unlike a wall, a player (but not mobs) can see through the openings in a fence. Obtaining[]Breaking[]Wooden fences are broken most quickly with an axe, but drop when broken with any tool. Nether brick fences require a pickaxe; mining it with anything else destroys it and drops nothing.

Notice that they do not form a connection directly between the two types of fences (in the middle). While fences appear to be a single block tall and have a hitbox height of one block, their collision box (for entities) is 1.5 blocks tall, meaning most mobs cannot jump over them without the Jump Boost status effect. They are transparent to light and have visual gaps in the model. Spiders can climb over a fence, just like any other vertical object. A fence occupies the center space of blocks and automatically connects to any solid block that is placed next to it. Wooden fences connect to other wooden fences, but do not connect to Nether brick fences. However, Nether brick fences connect to wooden fence gates.[1] Leads[]A horse tied to a tall fence post with a lead. Fences can be used to attach mobs with a lead. Fuel[]Overworld wooden fences can be used as fuel in furnaces, smelting 1.5 items per block. Note Blocks[]Wooden fences can be placed under note blocks to produce "bass" sound. Nether brick fences can be placed under note blocks to produce "bass drum" sound.
