How to fix a ski doo recoil

Day 1 of 3 on a trip out west and my xm won't start with the pull rope. Sled is brand new. It started fine at home and about 6 times this morning. Now I'm stuck wrapping the primary clutch with that nylon rope because the recoil just free wheels. Is there an easy fix for this?

My buddy had the same issue. Temps got so hot inside engine bay plastic parts started melting and that issue also appeared as well. Once it cooled down enough it would engage and start the motor. Apparently the clip inside the pull start is plastic and got damaged from heat. He was running an untested can which was generating excessive heat and the pre-filter in the nose which restricts too much airflow. All these combine to melt wiring harness and the cause same starting issue.

Yup, take it off the motor and clean out all the crappy grease they put in there from the factory. I had to do that to mine. It would occasionally catch and start the sled, but got fed up and fixed it. Pain to get off, but worth it.

Haven't heard this. I am going to check mine out. Maybe it is as simple as this.

See what it does tomorrow, my 09 800R did that first ride. Rode home in he enclosed trailer an never did it again. Dealer didn't even pull it off, "they do that some times!" Never acted up again in 2,300 miles.
Sucks especially on a carved sled after rolling it over!

Defiantly pull it off and at min clean off the grease. Skidoo sometimes puts too much in there. You want all the pieces to moved and pivot freely.

You may have had the inside cog catch, not rotate back out, and round off the ear. ( excess grease) Which will require s warranty of a recoil. Any dealer should be able to fix that.

If I want to pull this thing off and inspect for the issues you guys are talking about, do Springs and crap come flying out? Or does the whole assembly stay intact

The starter assembly will come off as one piece. It's when you take that apart that the spring will come flying out.

And I can clean this grease out without taking the recoil apart?

Plastic recoil plastic clip same as 2005. LoL....As per JP LaDoo you are to gently pull on the rope till it gets tight. Once tight gently pull the remain rope to start the motor. According to LaDoo the calibration requires no more than 2 gentle pulls to start.

When you have it off you can cycle the rope and watch what the pawl is doing, then go from there...nothing will fly apart..

In my crew we've bought 7 XM's since they introduced it and this happened to 2, dealer warranted both. Not ideal, but other than that mechanically we've had great luck.

This happened to a new XM in my group first day out in Revy last week. The pawls seemed to be sticky and not engaging. While out in the snow we pulled the can and tapped on the outside of the starter with an avy probe while gently cycling the rope in and out. It engaged and started within a few minutes. That happened again one more time that day. Seems to be from break in heat and possibly gummy lube from assembly. Once the starter had gotten hot and cooled down a few times the sled was problem free.

This has been an issue for quite a few years, electrical cleaner bath might doo it, have always put a couple strips on the recoil covers on my sleds to combat the extra heat of running a can. this from as far back as 02.

Thanks for the advice guys. I got it to grab from tapping on the recoil cover. We'll see what happens today while out riding.

It's covered under warranty, I changed mine last year. Cord would go back in after starting the sled. Second day it worked fine. Changed it anyway.

Same thing happened on my new 14 this yr, rode 12 miles, shut the sled off, freewheel starter. Tapped it with the shovel handle while pulling it over, good ever since, 5 rides later. Then same thing happened to a friends 15 this wknd, rode 12 miles or so, freewheel, tapp while pulling, good the rest of the day.
